Oceanside 70.3

Wade gave Ironman 70.3 Oceanside another go this past weekend. It proved a good choice seeing as how he beat his previous time by 30 minutes. Go Wade.

He's been enrolled in a swim class at the local community college with his friend Brett this past semester (they're hoping to make the Dean's list). I pitied him many a freezing morning at 5:15 when he'd roll out of bed to go jump in a cold pool. But it seems it was worth it. The coaching and workouts paid off, giving him his best swim time ever.

The bike went pretty well too. Especially the first half. So well in fact that I missed him! Ahhh! We dashed to see him on Christianitos for the few miles they come out of Camp Pendleton before heading back in. He was too speedy, (as in 22 miles an hour!!) and we were to slow getting our tradition of donuts on race day. I felt terrible about missing him, I know that's a boost to see your support crew out there cheering for you. The second half he says was significantly more difficult with hills and wind combating for his legs, but he pushed steadily on and was able to start on the run off well and feeling good.
He claims he never felt great on the run. I say, whatever. When you're half-ironman 13.1 doesn't equate to my personal best 13.1, all by itself then I'll feel sorry for you. He impressed me once again finishing 3 disciplines and 70.3 miles in 5 hours 26 minutes.
(Dent made an excellent showing as well)

Wade has this extraordinary ability to dig deep and call upon these big reserves hiding down inside his body somewhere. Perhaps it's all those years of pushing and pushing and pushing in soccer that trained him to be able to do that, maybe it's his sometimes unhealthy levels of competiveness, maybe it's just raw talent. Whatever it is, I wish I had more of it. It moves me again and again. It makes me proud and makes me want to be more like him. To be able to ignore or suppress the current feelings of pain and discomfort and focus so intently on the end goal. Maybe he'll rub off on me one of these days.

(too bright maybe?)

While Wade raced his pants off, Tessa played happily in the sand with her cousins. She turned into a mighty, sandy, snotty nose disaster and Bode made his race debut, spectating like a champ. I told him it was a great first showing and to keep it up, because this is our family way. Nice job Buster.

Katelyn you definitely have the talent and competitiveness in you, to a healthy degree of course. You are amazing at running, snow skiing, water skiing, climbing, etc. You and Wade, and Denten and Amberly have been great examples to my kids. I love going to watch their events and getting into the spirit of the race. It's electric.

Good job Wadey-Boy! I'm proud of you! Looks like you have another great fan. Tessa just needs to teach him to yell for Daddy.
Your turn next year, Wooser.

Very impressive Wade, good job! That feels so good when you succeed at something you have worked so hard for. Seeing those pictures make me want to come back to Oceanside! Who ordered the snow at my house?
